Haiti earthquake: Razed to the ground, the horrifying images of the destruction that may have killed 100,000 people

The earthquake itself is over - but as these images show, the horror in Haiti is only just beginning.

Stunned Haitians began stacking bodies on the streets of their devastated capital yesterday as distraught, dust-caked survivors clawed feverishly in the debris of shattered buildings.

Their prime minister said he feared the death toll from the huge earthquake could climb above 100,000 as the International Red Cross said up to three million people - almost a third of the population of one of the world's poorest countries - had been affected.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton last night said the damage was 'Biblical', and likened the disaster to the 2004 Asian tsunami.
'This is going to (be) one of the highest in terms of loss of life in recent years,' she said.

One leading politician, Senator Youri Latortue, suggested the toll could rise as high as 500,000. The full horror of the disaster was emerging yesterday-with scenes of utter devastation in the densely-populated city.

Bodies pulled from collapsed homes were laid at the side of the road and covered with sheets, with passers-by lifting the covering to discover if loved ones were underneath.

Haiti: Rape, murder and voodoo on the Island of the Damned

For tourists on cruise ships plying the Caribbean, Haiti appears a beguiling, mysterious place.

The first independent black state, set up 200 years ago after a rebellion by African slaves against colonial France, the mountainous island is home to exotic birds and animals and mist-shrouded tropical forests.

But it is no paradise for the country's nine million people. Indeed, the devastating earthquake now bringing death and heartbreak is the latest in a long line of tragedies to befall a place dubbed the Island of the Damned.

Those with the misfortune to be born in Haiti - part of the island of Hispaniola, shared with the Dominican Republic - have long endured a living hell.

With one in ten under-40s infected with HIV, and millions living in squalor and destitution, thousands try to flee each year to the U.S. by hanging on to anything that will float.

While hurricanes, floods and earthquakes have all devastated the landscape over the years, the biggest threat has come from humans.

He died later the same day.

She was due before Manchester Magistrates this morning. (TUE)

Two women aged 21 and 24, who were also arrested on suspicion of murder, have been released on bail until February 8.

Mr Darvill, a former pupil at Buile Hill School, lived in Swinton with his mother Jacqueline, her partner, and his younger sisters Becky and Lauren.

A page set up on the facebook website in his memory has attracted over 1,200 members.

Girl, 5, stabbed to death by mother in ritualistic killing after series of missed warnings

A mother stabbed her five-year-old daughter to death hours after she was deemed fit to care for her by police and social workers.

Paranoid schizophrenic Aisling Murray knifed daughter Chloe more than 50 times in a ritual killing at their home.

She then stripped Chloe's bedroom, removed wallpaper and turned her bed into an altar.

The 24-year-old mother had been checked on by police hours before the stabbing and was visited by social workers the previous day.

An investigation has found social workers, mental health teams and police missed a series of warnings over Murray and condemned them for failing to deal with repeated pleas for help from her family.

Her social worker was found to be 'inexperienced', bad with her time, hampered by a heavy case load and had inadequate supervision.

The assessment of Murray's condition by social workers on the day before the killing was judged to be 'seriously flawed'.
